Technological advances to modern phones have equipped them with advanced audio technology making recording audio on your iPhone or Android phone more easy than ever before. If you are recording an interview using your phone, a podcast, your voiceover, for example, you’re not going to get the best quality out of the gate; but there are some simple tips you can use on your phone recording on whether to make it sound better.
Improve the quality of audio recordings on iPhone phones
the audio recording quality is acceptable, but not for everyone; iPhones are among the best phones in the world in terms of quality. If you’re not satisfied audio recordings on your iPhone, here are some tips of yours.
Focus on the basics
But nothing about the actual recording process is complicated. The key is to concentrate on the basics of the recording process. For instance, the phone’s microphone needs to face you just around 15 to 20 centimeters or so away to pick up clear, balanced sound without noise.
Remember that the iPhone microphone is at the bottom of the phone a short distance from the port used for charging, so do check that is is not blocked by a hand holding the phone, a phone case or other obstacle when recording.
The second important one is to turn Do Not Disturb mode on your iPhone. This will enable incoming notifications, calls and alerts to be silenced while recording. You do not want it to be interrupted by an unexpected ringtone or vibration when you record something important.
To enable the recording enhancement option, go to the Memos Voice app on your iPhone , in the recordings list, click on the recording you want to enhance, then click on the More Actions button. Here, click on Options, then turn on Recording Enhancement, and then you can click on the Close button to save the changes and exit.
Switch to Lossless mode
By default, audio recordings in the Memos Voice app on iPhone are using lossy compression, but Lossless mode is the perfect thing to use for better quality recordings.
Lossless mode employs a lossless compression technology, i.e. a type of compression which encodes all the original data without increasing the recording size drastically. ALAC is the name of this tech which also makes your recordings clear while it doesn’t compress the recordings. Recording a podcast, lecture, or high quality audio work is an ideal choice when using this.
To activate this you will find yourself in the settings, applications and then music, where you have Sound Quality. There is the “Lollipop” which you can turn on or off. On the Apple's website, it offers lollipop with resolution of up to 24 bits/48 kHz or hi-res lossless offering maximum resolution of up to 24 bits/192 kHz.
Recording enhancement option
The Memos Voice App can still enhance your audio recordings even with good recording techniques and also when you select the “Lollipop” mode, as your recordings may be less than perfect so to get a cleaner and clearer sound, there is the recording enhancement feature in the app that you can use on your audio recordings to reduce noise and echo.
In order to do so, launch the Memos Voice app from your iPhone, get into the recordings list, click on the recording you want to enhance, and click on the More Actions button. Click on Options, then select Recording Enhancement, click close to save the changes and depart.
Skip gaps when playing back a recording
There are silent gaps in your recordings that can undermine the engaging experience so you should remove the unnecessary pauses. Luckily, you don’t need to use third party apps for doing this on the iPhone. One of the built in features of the Memos Voice app is its ability to rid of silent gaps from recorded notes.
To achieve playing the audio recording with no silent gaps, you just need to select the recording you need to edit, and click More Actions then Options and turn off Skip Silence and click Close and then you can hear your recording without any silent gaps.
As an important information about the iPhone, it is worth mentioning that it’s not difficult to improve the quality of your audio recordings on your iPhone. If you try the above tips, you will get great recordings. Now, if you are unhappy with results of recordings and desire them to be more professional, you can use external microphone.
Improve the quality of audio recordings on Android
It is a little bit more difficult to achieve perfect sound quality on Android phones than on iPhones, since most phone companies like Samsung, Xiaomi or Oppo implement different designs and hardware compared to iOS, which is limited to iPhones and iPads.
Although there are thousands of Android phones out there from different companies, there are some general rules that can tremendously improve the quality of sound recordings that aim at creating Android phone demos. We will mention them:
Adjust recording settings
If you want high sound quality then as soon as you enter the application of recording you use you adjust the conditions. The most important recording settings are bit rate, which should be high as you guys have mentioned, 256 kbps. It is also recommended not to be lower than 44.1 kHz where the frequency should also be assailed as well apart from the frequency.
> If you are planning to capture more audio detail and you better quality, you will pick higher bit rates, but this will also mean that you use more storage space, and so make sure that you have put away enough of this to get going with your recording.
We offer you to change the settings of the recording in a Standard and in an Interview mode. Personal voice memos or quick notes fit better in standard mode, but Interview mode enables you to activate several microphones to pick up sounds from different directions.
For professional recording, you best opt for WAV as the format (file extension), for smaller file sizes, MP3 if it is OK and check your microphone settings (too loud or too quiet) to not cause distort sound.
Remove background noise
You may take care of the location of your microphone and a good sound environment, but your audio recordings can have noise, echo, and other elements that inconvenience the clarity and quality of the recording.
In order to get a professional recording, the background noise has to be removed. Using a free AI noise removal tool, such as Adobe Enhance Speech, you can do this by allowing the tool to identify and remove noise and echo.
Use of external applications
What most Android phones have is a built-in audio recording app which is just fine if you're to record just simple audio snippets, if not however, you should use a third party app because it arguably grants you the best recording quality and more features that enable you to edit (mic noise reduction, adjust recording quality and more).
Dolby On is one great free option, which enables recording in WAV format in high quality with Dolby’s features to reduce background noise so you have control over the final result.
